Unidentified Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Prompts Concerns of Potential Algae Outbreak
Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Widespread Appearance Across Coastline
The magenta-hued slime was found on a portion of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on sections of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Specimens have been gathered and sent to the environmental agency for testing. A spokesperson commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to variations in food sources, warmth, rainfall or light".

A southern state in the past grappled with a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern coastline after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across a vast area. The bloom caused swimmers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have killed up to a quarter-million sea creatures across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.

A marine expert, who was involved in studying the beginning of the previous event said, based on photos of the Tasmanian outbreak, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There are lots of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she remarked.
The scientist explained this organism did not generate harmful substances like the organism involved in that severe event, but it does consume microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"You usually see a bloom of this algae after a bloom of a different species, or for example a fish reproduction," she said.

Lilly Henley, who took samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, commented it appeared the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and suggested the fish farming business was the probable cause, pointing to similar cases in other places.
"Therefore the state needs to issue a firm alert here, the authorities and the regulators need to react to this. We need to examine the samples we've taken and we need to notify the community here," she emphasized.
She stated she had worries for people's well-being after noticing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.

An advocacy organization has reported dead octopus and expired organisms washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist calling the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and urging the state premier to visit and "take control the response that government must be making".
